The cruel Baron Steinkopf's harsh taxes makes life a misery for his poor villagers - and the penalties for non-payment are severe. When Daisy, the woodcutter's widow, cannot deliver this year's load of logs for the Baron's fires he threatens to throw her family out into the snow and burn her cottage instead

But the villagers have a friend. The Black Shadow has always managed to trick and torment the Baron. Perhaps this mysterious stranger can come to the aid of the village, save Daisy's family from eviction and put the Baron in his place...
